Yesterday has past away a great Lady and a great politician who become Prime Minister on times of sorrow when British economy was on decline. Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990, she was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and is the only woman to have held the office.

A Soviet journalist called her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies that have come to be known as Thatcherism.

She had the strength to fight and turned it around and to lay a new path of economical growth for this country. She took the power from the Unions and give it back to the small entrepreneurs and she also won an imperial war.

God rest her soul.

Police resort to giving flowers to victims of burglaries and muggings to 'soften the blow' because they are 'unlikely to solve crimes'

Police are given bouquets of flowers to victims in an attempt to 'soften the blow' of hard to solve crimes burglaries and muggings.

Success rates for the detection of burglaries are as low as 12 per cent in the areas where forces are giving out flowers, including London and west Mercia.

Victims told The Sunday Telegraph that while they appreciate the thought, they would rather that police focused on solving their crimes.

The Met has sent out 300 bouquets in the north London borough of Barnet since November, including one to 55-year-old Sarah Miller.

She had two laptops, a camera and other valuables stolen from her home.

The day after the burglary Mrs Miller received a card apologising as the lack of evidence made it unlikely that her crime could be solved.

But the following day she received a £25 bouquet of flowers as well as a £5 voucher for the florist that donated them.

Mrs Miller said that although the flowers are lovely, she would rather the police used their resources elsewhere.

She said: 'Don't get me wrong, it was nice to receive them, but the thought that went into that could have gone into solving the burglary.

'I'd rather they'd have sent a community officer to comfort me after it happened rather than fobbing me off with flowers.'

Last year in London there were 55,693 residential burglaries, with only 12.5 per cent of them being recorded as solved, slightly below the national average for England and Wales of 13 per cent.

Police say that the gesture is meant to soften the blow of hard to solve crimes

A spokesman for the Met said: 'Giving someone flowers helps soften the blow and shows we are there to support them. We have found that just that simple gesture helps start up a dialogue with victims and helps them begin to feel safe again.'

Lancaster based flower wholesaler Florist donates 16 bunches a week free of charge.

They aim to increase their business while providing the flowers to people who have been through a hard time.

The West Mercia police force is also giving out flowers to victims as part of a local initiative started four years ago.

The flowers are paid for by the proceeds from the sale of unclaimed property, and contributions from officers and the public.

However when one was arrested he told cops: "I don't care – I go to prison to go on holiday."

The ten gang members came to the UK specifically to commit the crimes and had not done a day’s legitimate work while here, Old Bailey Judge Timothy Pontius said.

He gave them sentences totalling 82 years and ten months despite the young crooks pleading guilty and having no previous convictions.

They were also told they would be deported after serving their sentences.

The judge said the gang had entered the UK as European Union citizens with the intention of robbing jewellery shops of large amounts of high-quality gold.

Only a fraction of their haul had been recovered from the six raids or attempted raids – leaving the robbers with £1 million.

Judge Pontius said: “None of the defendants appear to have done an honest day’s work while they were here. All will be deported, and rightly so.”

 

He said there were fears an influx of people from Romania and Bulgaria when restrictions are lifted next year would lead to an increase in crime.

And the judge warned: “Anyone who comes to the UK – irrespective of whatever part of the world – wanting to commit serious crime, must clearly understand such abuse of the hospitality of this country and its people must be seriously punished.

“It follows that the more grave the crime, the more severe the retribution will be.

“No one should think for a moment that courts in the UK will be a soft touch.

The gang, who were often armed with sledgehammers, carried out seven raids in six months, emptying display cabinets and fleeing in minutes before police could respond to alarms.

They were caught after police kept watch on a makeshift campsite they were using on waste ground near the A12 in Essex.

An elderly man was injured when he was struck with a hammer before Flying Squad officers made arrests using Taser guns.

Marius Barbu, 25, Vasile Batarga, 23, Ioan Gavrilit, 26, and Iulian Culba, 22, were each jailed for nine years and four months.

Iulian Roman, 21, was jailed for nine years and six months which included a concurrent sentence of seven years for a £1 million raid on a jewellers in February last year.

Constantin Irina, 30, was jailed for eight years, and Georghe Macovei, 23, and Ovidiu Gabor, 25, for seven years.

Puiu-Danut Paunescu, 26, was jailed for seven years and three months, and Catalin Paise, 20, for six years and nine months

"Air conditioning engineer" sentenced to 4 years for bank burglaries

"DC Lewis Sanderson, from Croydon CID, who led the investigation, said: "This was a sophisticated scam that Annerson was involved with, targeting banks and building societies across the south-east."

UK: A man posing as an air conditioning engineer has been sentenced to four years imprisonment for a series of bank burglaries which netted him around £100,000 in cash.

Joe Charles Annerson, a 63-year-old man from North London was at Croydon Crown Court after pleading guilty to six artifice burglary offences at various locations across London and the south-east. 

Annerson carried out the offences over a four-month period between May and August 2012 and stole approximately £100,000 in cash from the various banks and building societies. He targeted premises in Brighton, Chelmsford, Croydon, Crouch End and Camden. 

On each occasion Annerson would contact staff at the branch, informing them on the phone that air conditioning engineers would be attending later that day. He would then attend the branch, with another – as yet unidentified – accomplice and they would both be let into the secure areas of the branch, with staff believing them to be genuine contractors. 

Once inside, they would then look for cash in low-security areas only accessible to staff of the bank, before stealing the cash and leaving. It could then take up to several hours for staff to realise that the cash or items had been stolen. 

DC Lewis Sanderson, from Croydon CID, who led the investigation, said: "This was a sophisticated scam that Annerson was involved with, targeting banks and building societies across the south-east. However, despite the weight of evidence against him, Annerson never admitted to any of the offences during interview with us and has not revealed the identity of his accomplice, who we are still keen to identify and bring to justice. 

"The banks affected have taken steps to improve their procedures to prevent this from happening in the future and assisted us fully throughout the investigation."
